As a resident of Bathurst, it is easy to see that the francophone population has increased in recent years.  The older generation can see this trend clearly.  With all the changes going on in Northern New Brunswick it is becoming much more important to have the ability to speak both English and French.  Having studied French from Elementary School to High School I do have the ability to speak basic French.  I was ranked Intermediate when I was tested in High School but after spending eight years in Japan any skills I once possessed have decreased.  It was a real eye opener when I started visiting local businesses and non-profit organizations and was met with "allo".  In some instances all I had to do was say "hello" in English and the employee changed to my native language.  On a few instances my "hello" was met with silence the more French.  At that point I had to squeeze every ounce of my past knowledge to explain clearly why I was visiting.  In the end I succeeded in communicating but realized I was far away from being a fluent speaker.

Update :  I now have a brand new French - English dictionary ready to take on the world and a local French radio station playing in my ear as I drive around the Bathurst community.  Nothing can stop me now!!!
