Getting your library card in New Brunswick is very different than it used to be.  When I was a child I remember going down to the local library and getting my first library card.  It was made by hand and I felt like a big person once she handed it to me.  We still used the old stamp card on the back of each book and I remember standing at the counter watching the lady stamp my books.  What an adventure!!

The new New Brunswick Public Library Service system doesn't bring back the same feelings I had as a child but is actually much more impressive.  I visited the public library in Bathurst for the first time since it moved to obtain a new library card.  My old information was not on file so I was able to get my new card for free.  From what I can understand if you lost your card or had a card at the old library it would cost you $2 but if they don't have you on file it is free.  Gone are the days that the librarian would neatly write your name and number on the card.  The new library card is plastic and looks like most other membership cards of the computer generation.  After passing along some personal information I had my new card in minutes ready to borrow.  After spending thirty minutes walking around I found two books that were of interest:

Canadian History for Dummies

Coins of New Brunswick

If you read my previous post concerning Atlantic Canadian coinage you would understand why I borrowed the second title.  After looking through The Canadian History for Dummies book I realized I was in need of basic knowledge which I either didn't learn in school or forgot about.

One of the most impressive things about the new library system is that many libraries in New Brunswick are connected.  My public library card can be used at more than 65 service points across New Brunswick.  I can borrow material from any public library or bookmobile in the network.  If I borrow a book at the Bathurst Library and I am in Moncton on business I can return the Bathurst book at the Moncton library.  It is very convenient for someone like myself who in the future will be on the road alot.
